I’m a Bad Happy-Maker

It’s December 3rd, and I haven’t put up my Christmas decorations yet.  I don’t feel the tiniest bit festive and I know it’s because my life is not draped in Christmas decorations.  Feeling kinda blah actually so I guess I need to get on that.  I’m scared to do it, though.  I know Mister Lukas will wreak havoc on my trees.  My cat doesn’t touch them.  When they are lit up and the lights create warmth, she sleeps under them, but that’s about it.  But Lukas?  He’s going to kill my Christmas trees, even though they’re fake!  I’m most worried about my colorful tree in the living room because a lot of the ornaments on that tree are older than my parents.  They were given to me by Jessie’s parents.  I really treasure them because you really can’t buy bulbs that beautiful anymore and I had hoped to pass them down to my offspring someday.  The icicle tree in the dining room has a few decorations on it that belonged to my grandmother and I would be very upset if anything happened to them.  Oh well.  I guess I have to suck it up and just do it.  Either that or don’t decorate for Christmas, but that’s really not an option.

I remember when I was little, the way my dad would complain and bitch whenever my mom would put up Christmas decorations.  I would watch A Christmas Story and watch how the dad on that movie would get all excited about Christmas and have fun buying and decorating the tree and wishing I had a dad more like that.  If my dad had had his way, we wouldn’t have decorated or even celebrated Christmas, and if we were to get gifts, they would come from grandparents.  I don’t have a lot of great memories of Christmas at home from when I was little thanks to my dad and I want to make sure that Lukas doesn’t have the same experience.  Now Jessie doesn’t bitch and moan, but he’s very nonchalant about the whole thing.  I’m the one that gets all excited.  I play Christmas music while I decorate and squeal when the trees are up and totally decorated.  Jessie looks up and says "Oh, that’s pretty" and goes back to whatever.  I’m ok with that.  At least he’s here.  I just want Lukas to remember that his childhood Christmases were awesome and that the house was always decorated nicely and that his Mom went psycho and giddy with the decorating.  Jessie has nothing but great memories of his childhood Christmases and I want the same for Lukas.  I want him to look back and say, "My parents did Christmas right."

And cookies?  You bet your sweet ass that there will be cookies this year now that Lukas can eat some.  Cookies, cinnamon scented candles, soft colorful lights, and surrounded by people who love you.  And liquor.  That sounds fun.

No, But I Have This….

Aschlie,

I’ve never made butter rum before.  I’ve never even had it before, but I know you would use a dark spiced rum and them I guess you would add some cinnamon and nutmeg.  A lot of recipes might not call for it, bit a little pinch of ground cloves always adds a nice dark spice to everything.  I have this recipe from a cookbook I have that specializes in holiday recipes and I haven’t found a bad recipe in here yet.  Our week of decadence every Christmas is pretty much right out of this cookbook.  I figure you can maybe try comparing the spice mixture in this recipe with the ones you have seen online.

Hot Buttered Cider

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened (USE BUTTER DAMMIT)

1/4 cup honey

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Apple cider or juice

1.  Beat sugar, butter, honey, cinnamon and nutmeg until well blended and fluffy.  Place butter mixture in tightly covered container.  Refrigerate up to 2 weeks.  Bring butter mixture to room temperature before using.

2.  To serve, heat apple cider in large saucepan over medium heat until hot.  Fill individual mugs with hot apple cider; stir in 1 tablespoon batter per one cup apple cider.

Makes 12 servings

I know this is basically worthless, but maybe it helps?  If you want recipes for ANYTHING festive, please ask.  I love swapping recipes.  Stephanie, remember when we used to do that every Wednesday?  I still love that hominy stew.
